Drakenstein Stud’s in-form sire What A Winter, South Africa’s Leading First Crop Sire of 2016-2017, has enjoyed a good run of late, and the four time G1 winner was at it again on Wednesday, when What A Winter was responsible for a pair of winners at Hollywoodbets Scottsville.

His progeny Winter Chill and Maidens Prayer won Wednesday’s second and third races respectively, with Winter Chill sent off a 19-10 tote favourite, and Maidens Prayer a 9-20 favourite.
The Greg Royden-Turner bred 3yo Winter Chill had been second in each of his two previous races, but made no mistakes in Wednesday’s maiden plate over 1200m when running out a facile two length winner for trainer Garth Puller and jockey Anthandiwe Mgudlwa.

The What A Winter colt is out of the Caesour mare Young Caesour.

Triple Equus Champion What A Winter also enjoyed success on Wednesday with his 3yo daughter Maidens Prayer.
Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, the Dennis Drier trained Maidens Prayer had finished fourth in the G2 Gagasi FM Debutante Stakes last time out and was all the rage for Wednesday’s 1200m race.
The 3yo What A Winter filly duly obliged, and won by just under a length.

What A Winter, whose progeny have won five times since Saturday, enjoyed a magnificent season in 2018-2019, with his star performers including G1 Bidvest Majorca Stakes winner Clouds Unfold, unbeaten G3 Cape Of Good Hope Nursery/Somerset 1200 hero Armando, Ibyahi Stakes victor Fabian and G3 Langerman victor Snow Report.
