Varsfontein Stud’s top-class stallion Gimmethegreenlight dominated local feature races, when his progeny shone in a pair of graded feature races at Kenilworth on Saturday.

Gimmethegreenlight’s daughters Third Runway and Roll In The Hay ran first and third in Saturday’s G2 Western Cape Fillies Championship, while his smart son Captain Tatters powered home to finish a close-up second in Saturday’s G3 Cape Classic over 1400 metres.

The Varsfontein Stud bred Third Runway, one of three feature race winners over the weekend for trainer Glen Kotzen and jockey Morne Winaar, made it three wins from only four starts when running out an impressive, one and three quarter length winner of the Western Cape Fillies Championship –the traditional pointer to the G1 Cape Fillies Guineas.

The lightly raced filly, making her first start since June, has now a pair of feature race successes to her name, with Third Runway having won the Listed Irridescence Stakes last season.

Gimmethegreenlight’s gelded son Captain Tatters went close to giving his sire a graded double on Saturday when that Justin Snaith trained three-year-old went down by less than half a length, when second in the G3 Cape Classic. A winner on debut, Captain Tatters has now been second in three features, having previously finished runner up in both the Listed Somerset 1200 and Listed Sophomore Sprint.

South Africa’s Leading First Crop Sire of 2015-2016, Gimmethegreenlight had an excellent season in 2018-2019, with his star performers including Equus Champion, and G1 Premiers Champion Stakes winner, Got The Greenlight plus fellow graded stakes winners National Park, Barahin, Rose In Bloom, La Bella Mia and Gimme One Night.
