The Vogel Vlei Stud based Red Ray was responsible for a third first-crop winner when his two-year-old daughter Maquette won the first race at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on Sunday afternoon.

Fifth on her only other start, the Duncan Howells trained filly duly went one better on Sunday with a fine performance in the tabgold-The Intelligent Bet! Maiden Juvenile Plate (Fillies) over 1000m.

Under Thabiso Gumede, Maquette stayed on to post a near one length win in Sunday’s race at the expense of Ancient Epic, with Ethiopian Queen nearly a half a length further back in third spot.

Bred by Klawervlei Stud, Maquette is out of the Captain Al mare Leeway.

She joins Global Glory and Razor Red as first crop winners for the Vogel Vlei Stud resident Red Ray.

The latter, a son of multiple champion sire Western Winter, was a top-class racehorse whose five wins included scores in all of the G1 Mercury Sprint, G3 Cape Classic and Listed Somerset 1200.

Runner up in three other G1 races, Red Ray is a full-brother to three graded stakes winners notably G1 Thekwini Stakes queen Nania.
