Fresh off supplying his first G1 winner last Saturday, Vogel Vlei Stud’s inform young sire Red Ray came up with another feature race winner when his first crop daughter Alula’s Star ran out an impressive winner of the Gold Rush Sprint (Non-Black Type) (1100m) at Turffontein on Saturday.

The Stuart Pettigrew trained three-year-old accounted for a high-class field under Philsande Mxoli, with Alula’s Star staying on too strongly for previously unbeaten Rafeef gelding Cleaver Greene and registering a one length win.
Fourth, when beaten just over a length, in the Listed Bauhinia Handicap on her previous outing, Alula’s Star has now won four of just nine starts, with the consistent filly yet to finish out of the first four.
Bred by Winterbach Stud, Alula’s Star is out of the Captain Al mare Solar Voyager.
The filly, her sire’s only runner at Turffontein on Saturday, was a R40 000 buy from the 2020 Cape Yearling Sale.
Alula’s Star’s G1 Mercury Sprint winning sire Red Ray recently made headlines when his three-year-old son Red Saxon captured the G1 WSB SA Classic at Turffontein.
A son of multiple champion sire Western Winter, Red Ray has two lots on offer at this year’s National Sale -a half-brother (Lot 225) to Listed East Cape Nursery winner Viking Moon, and a half-sister (Lot 404) to G3 Cape Classic winner Eighth Wonder.
