Maine Chance Farms’ leading sire Vercingetorix appears likely to be crowned South Africa’s Champion Sire for 2021-2022, and the son of Silvano enjoyed more feature race success when his champion son Nebraas captured the G3 WSB R10 000 1st Deposit Match Caradoc Gold Cup (2850m) on the Turffontein Standside track on Saturday.

One of three winners on the day for trainer Sean Tarry, Nebraas provided jockey Richard Fourie with his third graded win on Saturday when he fought off stablemate Black Thorn to land Saturday’s Caradoc Gold Cup by just over half a length.
Bred and owned by Al Adiyaat South Africa, five-year-old Nebraas came into Saturday’s race off a third place finish in the Listed Drum Star Handicap.

The gelding had been crowned South Africa’s Champion Stayer of 2020-2021 following a season which saw Nebraas claim both the G3 Marshalls World Of Sport Gold Cup and G3 DSTV Gold Vase.

His win on Saturday took Nebraas’ tally of victories to five from 17 starts, with the champion having banked more than R800 000.

Out of the Archipenko mare Noor Dubai, Nebraas is one of 17 stakes winners for former Equus Champion Vercingetorix, who currently heads the South African General Sires List.
The former G1 Jebel Hatta’s flagbearers this season also include G1 winning three-year-olds Chansonette (World Sports Betting Cape Fillies Guineas) and Pomp And Power (Jonsson Workwear Cape Derby) and the graded stakes winning sprinters Alesian Chief and Gallic Princess.

Vercingetorix has an outstanding draft on offer at this month’s National Yearling Sale, including a colt (Lot 31) out of a G1 winning daughter of Jet Master, a filly (Lot 47) whose G3 winning dam is a half-sister to champion Mythical Flight, and a colt (Lot 178) out of G1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic winner Siren’s Call.
