Varsfontein Stud’s multiple champion sire Gimmethegreenlight had another great day on Saturday when his star three-year-olds Sandringham Summit and Gimme A Nother won the G2 TAB Hawaii Stakes and G1 TAB Empress Club Stakes at Turffontein respectively.
Gimmethegreenlight went close to having a graded stakes treble on Saturday with his son Port Louis running a close up second in the G3 Variety Club Mile, with his G1 Gold Medallion winning son Lucky Lad finishing second to Sandringham Summit in the Hawaii Stakes.
Another by Gimmethegreenlight, Just Reckless, ran second in Saturday’s G2 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Nursery.
Brilliant filly Gimme A Nother made it seven wins from seven starts when she ran out a comfortable winner of Saturday’s Empress Club Stakes. In the process, the unbeaten filly claimed the fifth graded win of her career, with Gimme A Nother having previously won the G3 Betway Fillies Mile, G2 Mike De Kock Ipi Tombe Challenge, G2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas and G1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic.
Trained by Mike De Kock, Gimme A Nother was backed out at the start of Saturday’s R1 000 000 feature, but was passed fit to race, and duly lived up to expectations.
Under regular rider JP Van Der Merwe, Gimme A Nother tracked stablemate Humdinger, before quickening up smartly to go away and win Saturday’s G1 contest by a length and a half.
Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, Gimme A Nother is out of the Tiger Ridge mare Nother Russia and she looks headed for an Equus award.
Sandringham Summit, Equus Champion 2YO Colt of 2022-2023, claimed his fifth win from ten starts (and fourth graded victory) when he downed a high-class field to win the G2 TAB Hawaii Stakes.
The David Nieuwenhuizen-trained three-year-old showed his class when running on to claim Saturday’s Hawaii Stakes by a length and a quarter. Under Gavin Lerena, Sandringham Summit hit the front full of run and he stayed on strongly to defeat the likes of Lucky Lad, Unzen, At My Command and G1 World Sports Betting SA Classic winner Anfields Rocket.
Bred by Varsfontein Stud (where he is set to stand at stud), Sandringham Summit, victorious in this season’s G2 TAB Gauteng Guineas and last season’s G1 World Pool Moment Of The Day Premiers Champion Stakes and G2 Durban Golden Horseshoe, is out of the Captain Al mare Townsend and is thus bred on the same cross as fellow G1 winner Gunner.
The colt was a R1 700 000 buy from the 2022 National Yearling Sale.
South Africa’s reigning Champion Sire, Gimmethegreenlight also came up with two eye-catching winners at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday. His two-year-old daughter Kinda Wonderful turned the first race into a procession as she sped away to break her maiden, at the second time of asking, by six lengths, with Gimmethegreenlight gelding Go It Alone storming home to shed his maiden by three and a quarter lengths when victorious in the third race at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth.
The sire of more than 60 stakes winners, Gimmethegreenlight has an excellent draft on offer at the upcoming National Yearling Sale including a colt (Lot 175) out of a G2 winning daughter of Redoute’s Choice, a filly (Lot 286) out of the Silvano sired G3 Victress Stakes runner up Premier Dance, and a half-sister (Lot 288) to this season’s top-class three-year-old Double Grand Slam.
