Real Princess -a mare in a million!

9th July 2025

The Varsfontein Stud based Real Princess has enjoyed a tremendous season. The 2016 G1 South African Fillies Sprint winner’s season was crowned in glorious fashion, when Real Princess’ son The Real Prince won the G1 Hollywoodbets Durban July. Also victorious in the 2025 Listed City Of Cape Town Jet Master Stakes, The Real Prince was one of three stakes winners for his dam this season.

Remarkably, the same day that The Real Prince won the Jet Master Stakes, his outstanding full-brother Gimme A Prince won the G2 Khaya Stables Diadem Stakes. Prior to his Diadem win, Gimme A Prince had stormed home to land the G1 HKJC Cape Flying Championship by an emphatic five and three quarter lengths.

Real Princess, whose two-year-old son Gimmie Rules won on debut recently, is also the dam of 2024 G3 BakerMcVeigh Diana Stakes winner Gimmie’s Countess.

Real Princess, who looks set to be crowned South Africa’s Outstanding Broodmare for 2024-2025, has the pedigree to back up her tremendous race and produce record.
A daughter of champion sire and the increasingly successful broodmare sire Trippi, Real Princess is one of four stakes winners produced by her dam Pagan Princess. The latter, a winning Fort Wood half-sister to champions Kelly and Victory Moon, is also responsible for G1 Cape Guineas winning sire William Longsword as well as Listed Wolf Power 1600 hero Silver God and Listed World Sports Betting Sweet Chestnut Stakes queen Really Royal.

Varsfontein’s Carolyn Erasmus paid the following tribute to this wonderful mare.
”I will never forget the day Real Princess retired to stud and arrived at Varsfontein. She was turned out into a small paddock on her own and as I passed by I couldn’t help but stop and gaze at her for a long time as she strut up and down. I thought to myself “This must be the most perfect mare I have ever seen”, I was completely blown away.

Physically she was simply superior…athletic, powerful, well-made with the most beautiful, quality Trippi head. In her maiden year she was covered by Gimmethegreenlight and the next season gave birth to her first foal, Gimme A Prince. It’s a moment that sticks in Jaco’s mind, who delivered the colt. As he came out Jaco exclaimed “This is a group 1 winner!” Usually first foals can be smaller and lighter than average but not the case with Gimme A Prince. The mare had hit the ball out of the park, he was a standout colt, certainly one of the best foals of that crop. In her second year she visited Dynasty but unfortunately lost her pregnancy.

Thereafter she was covered by Gimme four years in a row producing The Real Prince, Gimmie’s Countess, Gimmie Rules and her unnamed yearling colt that has just started with pre-training. Last year she was in foal to Vercingetorix but unfortunately ran into complications and lost her pregnancy. We spent the 2024 season getting her back to good health and so she was not covered and is currently not in foal.

Real Princess has produced five foals for Lady Laidlaw all by Gimmethegreenlight, four colts and one filly. She has consistently produced top class stock, it seems to be a match made in heaven. With each new foal, we are impressed time and time again by this incredible mare.”
