Gimmethegreenlight colt wins on debut

4th Mar 2023

Varsfontein Stud’s champion sire Gimmethegreenlight has another smart-looking crop of two-year-olds this season. The son of More Than Ready came up with another bright-looking prospect when his son Lucky Lad made a winning debut at Turffontein on Saturday.
A full-brother to G3 Fillies Mile queen Follow Me, the Sean Tarry-trained Lucky Lad caught the eye in winning Saturday’s The Citizen Maiden Juvenile Plate (1160m).
Slow into stride, Lucky Lad raced very green for much of Saturday’s race, before Richard Fourie straightened him out and the pair went on to score a shade cosily by a neck, with another first-timer son of Gimmethegreenlight, Sandringham Summit, finishing second.
Bred by Varsfontein Stud, two-year-old Lucky Lad is out of the Caesour mare Imperial State.
The colt was an R850 000 buy from the 2022 National Yearling Sale.
Lucky Lad is the third two-year-old winner this season for Gimmethegreenlight, South Africa’s Champion Sire of 2020-2021 and currently the Leading Sire by Stakes for the current season.
At the time of writing, Gimmethegreenlight’s progeny had earned more than R11.498 million for the 2022-2023 South African season.
