47th stakes winner for Vercingetorix

12th January 2025

Fresh off enjoying a memorable feature race double on L’Ormarins King’s Plate day, Vercingetorix was at it again when his son Greaterix won Saturday’s G3 Betway Got The Greenlight Stakes.
In the process, the three-year-old became his sire’s 47th individual stakes winner.
Trained, like his sire, by Mike de Kock, Greaterix showed his class with a comfortable win in Saturday’s Turffontein feature.
Under Muzi Yeni, the grey came with a strong late run and stayed on nicely to land the R350 000 Got The Greenlight Stakes (1400m) by nearly three quarters of a length.
Greaterix, who had finished third, as favourite, in the G2 Betway Dingaans prior to Saturday’s win, has won four of six starts.
The grey was a R800 000 purchase from the 2023 National Yearling Sale.
Bred by part-owner Al Adiyaat, Greaterix is out of the Jet Master mare Semra and is bred on the same Vercingetorix/Jet Master cross as such stakes performers as African Warrior, Rascallion, Padre Pio and Magic Verse.
Champion Sire elect for 2024-2025, Vercingetorix went close to having yet another graded double on Saturday. His promising three-year-old daughter Salenio Peninsula was beaten a neck when finishing second in the G3 Betway Mother Russia Stakes, and she could well provide her sire with more black type success later in the season.
Maine Chance Farms’ star sire is having a fantastic season in 2024-2025, with Vercingetorix’s flagbearers this season including such graded stakes winners as Celtic Rumours, Double Grand Slam, Oriental Charm, Rascallion as well as the aforementioned Greaterix.
At the time of writing, Vercingetorix was more than R2.4 million clear of runner up Master Of My Fate on the South African General Sires premiership for the current season.
