58th stakes winner for Vercingetorix

4th May 2025

For a second weekend in a row, the progeny of Vercingetorix dominated feature race action in KwaZulu-Natal.
Last weekend, Vercingetorix runners captured all of the Listed In Full Flight Handicap, G3 Tote Strelitzia Stakes and G3 Tote Godolphin Barb Stakes.

Yesterday, Vercingetorix went close to having another feature race treble in Natal.
His sons Gladatorian and Sail The Seas won the G2 Independent On Saturday Drill Hall Stakes and G2 World Sports Betting Guineas respectively, while Vercingetorix’s G2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas winner Spumante Dolce was just beaten into second place in Saturday’s G2 World Sports Betting Fillies Guineas.

In landing the Guineas (a race won by Vercingetorix back in2013), Sail The Seas became his sire’s 58th stakes winner.
The Justin Snaith trained colt was given a fine ride by Muzi Yeni to land Saturday’s R750 000 feature.

Yeni bought his mount with a well timed charge and the pair kept going to win the 2025 World Sports Betting Guineas by over half a length.

Bred by Drakenstein Stud, the July bound Sail The Seas has won five of ten starts, having finished second in the G1 SplashOut Cape Derby prior to his Guineas win.

The colt, who took his earnings to R1,091,200  on Saturday, is out of the Philanthropist mare Sail, with Sail The Seas a R500 000 buy from the 2023 National Yearling sale.

He is one of 11 stakes winners to have already emerged from Vercingetorix’s current crop of three-year-olds, with this crop poised to unleash further black type winners.
