A great start to 2023 for Cheveley Stud

5th Jan 2023

Long regarded as one of the top thoroughbred stud farms in the Cape, Cheveley Stud has enjoyed a wonderful summer this season thus far.
Not only did Cheveley breed recent graded stakes winners Navy Strength (G3 Drakenstein Stud Cape Summer Stayers Handicap) and Taikonaut (G3 Lebelo Sprint), the farm also either bred or raised recent winners Miss Nibbles, Rulership, Touch Of Grace, and Rascova.
That filly became the first winner for the late G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup winner Lancaster Bomber, with the latter’s death appearing a real setback for the South African breeding industry.
Bred on similar lines to the Cheveley Stud bred champion Bela-Bela (herself the dam of this season’s top-class three-year-old filly Ciao Bella), Navy Strength is a son of Dynasty out of Bela-Bela’s G3 winning half-sister Spring Lilac. The latter has proved an outstanding producer and is also dam of dual G1 winner Snowdance, Listed Laisserfaire Stakes heroine Victorian Secret (dam of recent debut winner Golden Sickle), East Cape Breeders Stakes heroine Juniper Spring and the smart Captain Fontane.
Fellow graded stakes winner Taikonaut is a son of Twice Over and the very smart Earth’s Orbit. The latter, who finished third in all of the G2 Choice Carriers Fillies Championship, G2 Tibouchina Stakes, G3 Umzikhulu Stakes, and G3 Prix Du Cap, is also dam of luckless World Sports Betting Perfect Promise Sprint winner Mercury Rising and last season’s WSB Sign Up Now Ladies Mile runner up Veronica Mars. The latter was sired by the Cheveley bred and based champion Legislate

Cheveley’s Vaughan Koster is understandably delighted with his recent run of success, saying, ” Navy Strength was a very backward yearling with an athletic walk. He only looks like he’s coming to hand now.
Taikonaut was always a nicely put together yearling. He was average size but walked like a trooper. He has a yearling half brother by Legislate who I’m lead to believe is magnificent.
Rulership was born and raised on Cheveley for the Baitz family. He has a yearling half brother by Captain of All and a foal half sister by Rafeef who’s beautiful.
Touch of Grace was raised in partnership with Basil Marcus and Wendy Probert. She has a yearling half sister by Legislate who is very nice.
Rascova is particularly exciting as she won first time out and she’s by Lancaster Bomber who I have always loved. It’s a great loss that he’s no longer with us. She has a yearling full brother going to sale next year and a magnificent half sister foal by Hawwaam. ”

Cheveley Stud would like to thank all the buyers and underbidders for their support in 2022 and wishes them, and their loyal clients, all the best going forward into the New Year.
