Back to back graded wins for Erupt relative

4th May 2025

Maine Chance Farms’ resident sire Erupt is closely related to one of the more exciting three-year-olds currently in training.
The progressive Garrix, whose dam Makiwara is a half-sister to Erupt, made it back to back graded stakes wins when he won the G3 Legal Eagle Stakes (1800m) at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Sunday.
Trained by Piet Steyn, the gelded three-year-old was sent off 87-100 favourite for Sunday’s R350 000, following a win in the G3 Variety Club Mile.
Under the inform Gavin Lerena, Garrix showed plenty of heart when putting his head down on the wire to hold off older rival Otto Luyken and win by a head.
Bred by Jagessar Limited, Garrix, who had finished third in the G1 SplashOut Cape Derby earlier in the season, has won four of eight starts.
The Vercingetorix gelding was a R475 000 buy from the 2023 August Two Year Old Sale.
His dam Makiwara, a Smart Strike half-sister to the dual G1 winner Erupt, is out of the Caerleon sired G3 Prix Vanteaux winner Mare Nostrum.

A son of Dubawi, whose sire sons also include the likes of Night Of Thunder, Too Darn Hot, Ghaiyyath, and New Bay, Erupt himself enjoyed success at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Sunday when his son Jet A One won the third race.
