Boland Stud’s Potala Palace colt one to watch!

20th Jun 2018

Boland Stud will be offering 12 yearlings by Gr.1 winning stallions at the 2018 KZN Yearling Sale, and one of these is the  smashing colt catalogued as Lot 208. As yet unnamed lot 208, the beautifully balanced bay is a son of Singspiel’s talented son Potala Palace, one of the leaders of his generation.

Lot 208

From the same male line as sire legends Galileo, Montjeu, Medaglia D’Oro and High Chaparral, Potala Palace won three of his first four outings, with his victories including the Premier’s Champion Stakes (where he beat subsequent top class sire Gimmethegreenlight and fellow Gr.1 winners Fighting Warrior and Master Plan).

The handsome bay, who was handled by Mike Azzie, trained on well to land the 2013 Gr.3 Joburg Spring Challenge where Potala Palace beat Equus Champion, and millionaire, Link Man by a length, with Gr.1 Summer Cup winner Wagner back in third spot. Also fourth to the outstanding pair of Jackson and Variety Club in the 2012 G1 Investec Cape Derby, Potala Palace retired to stud having earned over R600 000 in prize money.

Potala Palace made the perfect start when his very first runner, daughter Watsonia (subsequently third in the East Cape Fillies Nursery) made a winning debut over 800 metres as well as debut winner and Golden Horseshoe entry Basilius.
He is also the sire of feature race contender Dalai’s Promise and Silken Prince, who ran second, in open company, on debut.

The Boland Stud offered colt is out of the winning Jet Master mare Jet Princess – a full-sister to Singapore Gr.2 winner, and Gr.3 Matchem Stakes winner Thundering Jet.

Second dam is the Hobnob mare Bar The Shouting –a half-sister to Gr.1 filly Imperial Harmony.

This colt is directly descended from one of the most important matriarchs in the stud book. Eighth dam is Wokingham Stakes winner Kong, whose son Nimbus won the 1949 Epsom Derby and 2000 Guineas. Kong also produced Richmond Stakes and multiple Leading Sire of 2YOs Grey Sovereign. The latter was a massively important stallion whose offspring included successful sires Fortino, Zeddaan, and Sovereign Path, French 2000 Guineas hero Don and Cheveley Park winner Queensberry.

Seven times champion sire Jet Master is a rapidly emerging broodmare sire of note. To date he is damsire of the likes of Gr.1 winners Lady In Black and Edict Of Nantes (Gr.1 Investec Cape Derby), Green Plains (Gr.2 SA Fillies Nursery), Exit Here (Gr.3 Cup Trial), Silvano’s Jet (Gr.2 Gold Circle Derby), Here Comes Billy (Gr.2 Merchants), Rivarine (Gr.3 Lebelo Sprint) and Summer Angel (Gr.3 Umzimkhulu Stakes) to mention just a few.
