Former Investec Derby winner Ruler Of The World, a half-brother to Drakenstein Stud’s inform resident sire Duke Of Marmalade, made headlines at Santa Anita on Saturday when his three-year-old daughter Iridessa won the G1 Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Turf in courageous fashion.
From the first crop of her sire, three-year-old Iridessa made it win number five, and G1 win number four, from 12 outings with a game win in Saturday’s one mile and two furlongs contest.
Iridessa was third in the early stages, then outdueled Santa Anita-loving Vasilika in the stretch to prevail by a neck under the urging of jockey Wayne Lordan.
“It’s very special,” said winning trainer Jospeh O’Brien, who joins Freddie Head as the only people to ride and train a Breeders’ Cup winner. “Obviously, I’ve been coming here a number of years, and I know how hard it is to compete here. I supposed I’ve been in a previous position to have been supported by some fantastic owners since I started training. And, obviously, with that I’ve had some very good horses. And it’s very special. It hasn’t sunk in yet that we’ve had a winner here.”
A G1 winner at two (when victorious in the G1bet365 Fillies’ Mile), and three (her previous scores include triumphs in G1 Juddmonte Pretty Polly Stakes and G1 Coolmore “Fastnet Rock’ Matron Stakes this year), Iridessa has now banked in excess of £1.5 million.
Her sire Ruler Of The World and the latter’s five time G1 winning half-brother Duke Of Marmalade hail from an outstanding female line, also responsible for leading sires A. P. Indy, Al Mufti, Lemon Drop Kid and Tiger Ridge, as well as former G1 Breeders’ Cup Mile hero Court Vision –the sire of Friday’s G1 TVG Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Storm The Court.
Duke Of Marmalade, the sire of more than 70 stakes horses the world over, has five lots on offer at this month’s CTS Ready To Run Sale.
