Five time G1 winner Canford Cliffs, who is standing his first season at Ridgemont Highlands this year, made news at Moonee Valley on Saturday.
His high class son Cliff’s Edge became a millionaire when landing the G2 Schweppes Crystal Mile for trainer Darren Weir and jockey John Allen.
The four-year-old colt, sent off a 9-5 favourite for the mile race, bested 206 G1 Victoria Derby winner Prized Icon to win the Mile by half a length, with his other beaten rivals including G1 Doncaster Mile hero It’s Somewhat.
Cliff’s Edge, who was produced by the Snaadee mare Simulation, has now won eight times from 21 outings with Saturday’s G2 score taking his earnings to AUS$1 033 960. His previous four stakes victories include the G2 Hacer Group Alister Clark Stakes, G3 Ladbrokes Classic and G3 Ladbrokes Manfred Stakes.
The 4yo entire will be given his chance for Group 1 glory as Weir indicated he will back up in next week’s $1 million Group 1 Kennedy Mile at Flemington.
“He’s got the perfect racing style,” Weir told Racing.com.
“He’d be a great horse to own because he never runs badly. He makes his own luck up on the speed and he just controlled the race there.
“We were hoping to lead, that didn’t happen but being outside the leader was fine and he just put himself into a position to win the race.
“Now that he’s done a bit of racing, he had a fetlock chip removed, I think he appreciates a smidgen of cut out of the track but we got away with it today.”
Canford Cliffs also enjoyed success in South Africa during the last week, when his son Meraki romped home to a two and a quarter length win over 1400m at Durbanville last Saturday.
