Wednesday’s Equus Awards ceremony was dominated by Cape bred thoroughbreds. Not only did the Moutonshoek bred Captain’s Ransom claim the coveted title of South African Horse Of The Year for the past 2021-2022 season, that brilliant daughter of Captain Al was also named Champion Older Filly/Mare and Champion Sprinter.
Trained by Justin Snaith for owner Suzette Viljoen, Captain’s Ransom enjoyed a magnificent season in 2021-2022, winning six of seven starts including the G1 Cartier Paddock Stakes, G1 Schweppes Majorca Stakes, G1 South African Fillies Sprint and G1 Mercury Sprint. The star bay has won 12 of 15 starts for earnings of more than R3 000 000 in stakes and she is another wonderful advertisement for the quality of thoroughbred produced by Cape breeders!
Drakenstein Stud also enjoyed an outstanding season in 2021-2022 and the farm claimed seven Equus Awards on Wednesday, including the titles of Outstanding Breeder and Champion Owner. The Drakenstein bred Jet Dark, arguably unlucky not to be named Horse Of The Year, picked up three awards on the night -namely Champion Older Colt/Gelding, Champion Miler and Champion Middle Distance Horse.
