Multiple G1 winners Canford Cliffs and Duke Of Marmalade, who currently stand at Ridgemont Highlands and Drakenstein Stud respectively, both made headlines as broodmare sires on Tuesday’s opening session of the 2019 Arqana October Yearling Sale.

Duke Of Marmalade’s daughter Chasing Ice had a No Nay Never colt (Lot 62) fetch €300 000 to the bid of Arthur Hoyeau, who signed on behalf of Coolmore.
Hoyeau said of the colt, “He’s a horse with a lot of quality and by a stallion who really improves his stock. I bought him on behalf of MV Magnier and he will go to Aidan O’Brien.”

Canford Cliffs, who, like Duke Of Marmalade, won five G1 races during his career, is broodmare sire of a filly who made €200 000 to Mandore Agency/Sunderland Holding.

Consigned by Haras d’Etreham, he filly (Lot 44) is out of Canford Cliffs’ Prix Six Perfections winning daughter Aktoria and traces back directly in female line to the great producer Stilvi.

Nicolas de Watrigrant, involved with the purchase, said after the buy, “She was supposed to go to Tattersalls Book 1 but she was withdrawn with a minor cough. We are lucky to buy her today and both Jean and I loved her. She is a filly with a lovely temperament who moves well. I hope she is a nice prospect.”
