Cape sires’ Royal Ascot connections

18th Jun 2018

A number of Cape based stallions will have connections to runners at this week’s prestigious Royal Ascot meeting, with the horses below among the likely runners on the first two days of this magnificent race-meeting.

Drakenstein Stud’s in-form stallion Duke Of Marmalade is broodmare sire of Tuesday’s G1 St James’s Palace Stakes runner Chilean, while Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm’s G1 winning and G1 sire Oratorio is damsire of leading Queen Mary Stakes, run at Ascot on Wednesday, entrant Servalan.

Black Minnaloushe, a proven G1 sire, is another Cape stallion likely to be represented at this year’s meeting as a broodmare sire. The dual G1 winning son of Storm Cat is broodmare sire of Tangled, one of 23 runners in Wednesday’s G3 Jersey Stakes over 1400 metres.

Moutonshoek resident The United States is a full-brother to multiple G1 winner Rhododendron, a runner in Wednesday’s G2 Duke Of Cambridge Fillies Stakes, while leading St James’s Palace Stakes hope Romanised is from the same family as Sandown Stud based National Stakes winner Pathfork.

Deceased former Daytona sire Sportsworld is broodmare sire of Listed Wolferton Handicap entry Spark Plug –whose previous wins include the Listed Gala Stakes.

Another Wolferton entry with ties to Cape stallions is the regally bred Sharja Bridge (by Oasis Dream). He is a full-brother to Maine Chance Farms’ boom sire Querari and ½ to G3 Bavarian Classic hero Quasillo, the only son of Sea The Stars standing at stud in South Africa.
