Ridgemont Highlands’ five time G1 winning sire Canford Cliffs came up with a smart looking debut winner when the latter’s two-year-old son Cliff Hanger made a winning debut on Wednesday.
Hailing from the Yogas Govender yard, Cliff Hanger was sent off a 25-2 shot for the Tabgold Card Call Maiden Juvenile Plate (1100m) but made a mockery of his price with a game display.
Under Billy Jacobson, Cliff Hanger dug down gamely in the closing stages of Wednesday’s Hollywoodbets Scottsville race to deny fellow first-timer Warrior Of Royalty victory and score by just over half a length.
Bred by Clifton Stud, Cliff Hanger is out of the Var mare Luneburg. The colt was a R90 000 purchase from the 2022 KZN Yearling Sale.
His sire Canford Cliffs was himself an exceptional two-year-old, winning two of three starts including the 2009 G2 Coventry Stakes by six lengths.
The son of Tagula made his mark with his first South African two-year-olds last season headed by G1 Thekwini Stakes runner up Rock The Fox and dual stakes winner Cliff Top.
The latter recently enjoyed more feature race success when Cliff Top romped home to a clear-cut win in the recent Fairview Merchants.
Canford Cliffs has three lots on the upcoming Cape Yearling Sale.
