Maine Chance Farms’ blue-blooded sire Erupt has some very promising two-year-olds to his name this season, and Erupt came up with another eye-catching juvenile winner when his son Chilli Moon won on debut on Tuesday.
Trained by Lucky Houdalakis, the gelded Chilli Moon defied his starting price of 20-1 with a courageous effort in Tuesday’s 4Racing Welcomes You Maiden Juvenile Plate (1200m) at the Vaal.
Under a strong ride from Kaidan Brewer, Chilli Moon showed great heart to see off the well-backed Captain Wara and win Tuesday’s heat by a short-head.
Bred by Dr Veronique Kritzinger, Chilli Moon is out of the Silvano mare Chillon.
The gelding was an R260 000 purchase from the 2022 Cape Yearling Sale.
His dual G1 winning sire Erupt is having a fine season with his two-year-olds this season, and is currently fifth on South Africa’s Leading Sires of 2YOs log for 2022-2023.
Among Erupt’s other promising two-year-olds this season are G3 Godolphin Barb Stakes runner-up Golden Tatjana, G3 Strelitzia Stakes second-place finisher Hot Pearl, and the speedy Ruffian Stakes runner-up Ripple Effect. The latter also finished third in the recent G2 World Sports Betting SA Fillies Nursery and has won twice from just five starts.
