Klawervlei Stud’s exciting stallion Pomodoro, South Africa’s Champion First Crop Sire of 2017-2018, enjoyed double success at Wednesday evening’s Cape Racing/Breeding Awards ceremony.
Pomodoro’s first crop daughter Return Flight, who was bred by Mike Sharkey, was named Cape Breeders’ Champion 2YO Filly for the recently concluded season of 2017-2018. Trained, like her sire, by Sean Tarry, Return Flight won three of five outings during her first campaign and became Pomodoro’s first G1 winner when romping home to a 1.75 length win in the G1 Thekwini Stakes last month.
A R20 000 buy from the 2017 March Yearling Sale, Return Flight has already banked R634 625 in stakes and she looks a hugely exciting prospect for the season ahead.
Pomodoro himself received Cape recognition when named Outstanding New Stallion for the 2017-2018 season.
The son of Jet Master enjoyed tremendous success with his first runners last season winning eight races and earning more than R1.5 million in stakes money –making Pomodoro the Leading First Crop Sire by stakes for the season.
Return Flight aside, Pomodoro’s first 2yos last season also include the high class males Cirillo and Royal Italian –runner up in the G2 SA Nursery and Listed Storm Bird Stakes respectively.
Winner of the 2012 Vodacom Durban July, Pomodoro has two fillies on offer at next week’s National Two Year Old Sale. His pair consists of a half-sister to 4 winners including dual Gold Bowl second Lions Emblem (Lot 393) and a filly from the same family as champion German filly Paita (Lot 421).
