Varsfontein Stud’s star sire Gimmethegreenlight, recently crowned South Africa’s Champion Sire, Leading Sire of 2YOs and Leading Sire of 3YOs for a second year in a row, more than made his presence felt at Thursday night’s Equus Awards ceremony.
No fewer than three of Gimmethegreenlight’s offspring won Equus Awards on Thursday, with his sons Proceed and Green With Envy crowned Equus Champion 2YO Colt and Equus Champion 3YO Colt respectively for 2023-2024, and his unbeaten daughter Gimme A Nother named Equus Champion 3YO Filly for the recently concluded 2023-2024 season.
Bred by part-owner Laurence Wernars, Proceed won three of seven starts last season, including the G1 Gold Medallion and G3 TAB Protea Stakes, and he also finished second in the G2 Durban Golden Horseshoe.
Out of the Captain Al mare Xplosive Kiss, Proceed is bred on the same Gimmethegreenlight/Captain Al cross as the likes of fellow G1 winners Sandringham Summit and Gunner.
Brilliant filly Gimme A Nother, who races for breeder Mauritzfontein, won all seven of her starts in 2023-2024. The star filly won five graded races last season including the G1 TAB Empress Club Stakes, G1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic, G2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas, G2 Mike De Kock Ipi Tombe Challenge and G3 Betway Fillies Mile.
Out of the Tiger Ridge mare Nother Russia, Gimme A Nother has earned R2 525 000 in prize money.
Gimmethegreenlight is also the sire of top-class colt Green With Envy, Equus Champion 3YO Colt for 2023-2024. Bred and owned by Khaya Stables, Green With Envy won five times last season, picking up four graded stakes races in the process.
Out of the Galileo mare Miss Coco, Green With Envy won all of the G1 Daily News 2000, G1 SplashOut Cape Derby, G2 World Sports Betting Guineas and G3 Schweppes Politician Stakes last season.
