Varsfontein Stud’s promising young stallion Erik The Red came up with a second, first-crop graded stakes winner on Sunday.
His three-year-old son Vapour Trail showed his class when storming home to win the G3 Cape Classic (1400m) at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth.
Trained by Vaughan Marshall, Vapour Trail hit the front, under Richard Fourie, 200m from home and romped away to win Sunday’s R350 000 contest by two lengths.

Bred by Drakenstein Stud, Vapour Trail was a R250 000 buy from the 2024 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.
Third in last season’s G3 Langerman, the Erik The Red colt has won two of seven starts for earnings of R360 287.

Owned by Rikesh Sewgoolam, who also part-owns Vapour Trail’s champion three-parts brother One Stripe, Vapour Trail is out of the Silvano mare Silver Stripe.

Sunday’s winner is bred on the same Erik The Red/Silvano cross as last season’s G2 Follow@WorldPool on Umkhomazi Stakes winner Zalatoris.

South Africa’s Leading First Season Sire of 2024-2025, Erik The Red is also the sire of promising filly Danish Dynamite, a winner of four of her six starts.
