Erik The Red’s half-sister wins again

30th March 2022

Beautifully bred three-year-old La Folie Douce, a half-sister to Varsfontein Stud’s popular young stallion Erik The Red, picked up her second career win with an impressive triumph at Durbanville on Tuesday afternoon.

A daughter of Silvano, the Varsfontein bred and owned filly was rewarded for consistency, with La Folice Douce having finished in the first four in each of her five previous outings.
Under S’Manga Khumalo, the Justin Snaith trained filly hit the front some way from home, and kept finding more in the closing stages to land Tuesday’s Racehorse Owners Association FM 78 Handicap (1250m) by three-parts of a length.

La Folie Douce has now won or been placed in seven of her eight starts.

She shares her G1 Majorca Stakes winning dam Covenant with five time stakes winner Erik The Red, whose principal victories included the G2 Cape Thoroughbred Sales Cape Merchants, G2 Epol Umzimkhulu Stakes, and G3 Kepu Cape Of Good Hope Nursery.

One of the speediest sons of multiple champion sire Captain Al, and closely related to the Captain Al sired Triple Crown winner Malmoos, Erik The Red also hails from the same female line as this season’s top-class two-year-old, and recent G3 Protea Stakes winner, Karangetang.
