Maine Chance Farms’ outstanding resident sire Vercingetorix had another good weekend this week, with his son Bereave landing Saturday’s G2 Khaya Stables Diadem Stakes and his unbeaten daughter Mrs Geriatrix victorious in Sunday’s Listed Ruffian Stakes.
Winner of the 2021 Listed Southeaster Sprint, the Adam Marcus trained Bereave made amends for his fourth place finish in the 2022 Diadem Stakes when running out a smart winner of that Hollywoodbets Kenilworth feature on Saturday.
Under Gavin Lerena, the speedy five-year-old was unleashed close home and Bereave powered home to best last out G1 Pongracz Cape Flying Championship winner Gimme A Prince and win by a length.
Bred by the Collins Stud Farm, Bereave has now won five of 16 starts for earnings of more than R430 000.
The gelding is out of the Cataloochee mare Jeanre.
His G1 Jebel Hatta winning sire Vercingetorix struck again at Turffontein the following day when his two-year-old daughter Mrs Geriatrix ran out a ready winner of the Listed Ruffian Stakes over 1000 metres.
One of two Listed winners on Sunday for trainer Sean Tarry, Mrs Geriatrix flew home, under Richard Fourie, to claim the 2023 Ruffian Stakes by three-parts of a length.
Now unbeaten in two starts, Mrs Geriatrix is out of the Kahal mare Velvet Glove.
Bred by Clifton Stud, Mrs Geriatrix is the 25th stakes winner for Vercingetorix.
Vercingetorix went close to having yet more feature race success when his daughter Queen Of Shadows finished a close second in Sunday’s G3 Acacia Stakes.
