Ascot Stud’s homebred July winning champion Bold Silvano made headlines at Fairview on Friday when his daughter Klever Kathy won the day’s feature race –the Aloe Handicap –for trainer Gavin Smith and jockey JP Van Der Merwe.
Always handy in Friday’s 1300m contest, the Riyo Stud bred three-year-old pulled clear in the closing stages to post a one and a quarter length win at the expense of the favourite, and East Cape champion, Madame Speaker.
The talented Klever Kathy, who has won three of her last four outings, has been the soul of consistency with the three-year-old having won or placed in 12 of her 14 outings.
The filly’s previous efforts include a third place finish in last season’s Listed East Cape Fillies Nursery.
Klever Kathy is from the same crop as her sire’s high class performers Bold Eagle (G3 Protea Stakes), March Music (2nd Lady’s Slipper Stakes), and Mazai (2nd G2 Golden Slipper).
Her Equus Champion sire Bold Silvano, whose wins included both the 2010 G1 Vodacom Durban July and the 2011 G3 Al Maktoum Challenge, had previously made his mark at stud through his high class performers Bold Respect (G1 Tsogo Sun Sprint), Flasher On The Run (Zimbabwe Guineas) and the Dubai based Bold Rex.
He is one of 20 G1 winners sired by multiple champion sire Silvano, whose other sire sons include current Leading First Crop Sire Vercingetorix.
