Maine Chance Farms’ outstanding stallion Vercingetorix dominated Hollywoodbets Greyville on Hollywoodbets Durban July day.
The champion son of Silvano had no fewer than four winners on Saturday, with the Vercingetorix sired runners Chronicle King, Double Grand Slam and Zeitz winning the G2 Omoda Golden Horseshoe, G1 Ridgemont Garden Province Stakes and Listed Premier Gateway International Handicap respectively.
Remarkably, Vercingetorix went close to having a feature race four timer with his daughter Quickstepgal running second in Saturday’s G2 SplashOut Golden Slipper and son Holding Thumbs filling the runner up berth in the G3 Durban Gold Vase.
The Justin Snaith trained Double Grand Slam claimed her second G1 victory when she landed Saturday’s Ridgemont Garden Province Stakes (1600m) at Hollywoodbets Greyville.
Under Andrew Fortune, the top-class four-year-old dug down deep to beat classy three-year-old Mon Petit Cherie by just over three-parts of a length.
Bred by Varsfontein Stud, Double Grand Slam, also victorious in the G1 Paddock Stakes this season, has won eight of 18 starts, with the filly having won five graded stakes races.
Owned by Drakenstein Stud, Gary Player and Dave MacLean, Double Grand Slam is out of the Captain Al mare Princess Peach and is bred on the same cross as fellow G1 winners Mia Moo and Vernichey.
Promising two-year-old Chronicle King became his sire’s 60th stakes winner when he won the Omoda Golden Horseshoe. Trained by Candice Dawson for John Finlayson, the colt stayed on powerfully to land the Golden Horseshoe by just over a length.
Winner of the G3 City Of Cape Town Politician Stakes earlier in the season, the Andre Nel trained Zeitz provided his sire with yet another feature race win when he won the Premier Gateway International Handicap. The three-year-old was given a finely timed ride by Serino Moodley to capture Saturday’s Listed feature by just over three parts of a length.
Bred by Maine Chance Farms, and owned by Sabine Plattner, Zeitz has won three of nine starts.
At the time of writing, Vercingetorix is South Africa’s Leading Sire and Leading Sire of 3YOs, for 2024-2025.
Among the other notable races won by his progeny this season is the G1 Cartier Paddock Stakes, G1 South African Fillies Sprint, G2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas, G2 World Sports Betting Guineas, G2 World Sports Betting Green Point Stakes, G2 Independent On Saturday Drill Hall Stakes, and G2 TAB Camellia Stakes.
