Fire Away relative lands Discovery Stakes

2nd Dec 2019

Wilgerbosdrift’s blue blooded young stallion Fire Away gained an umpteenth boost to his impeccable pedigree page when close relative Performer stormed home to an impressive win in the G3 Discovery Stakes at Aqueduct on Saturday.

Performer

Three-year-old Performer (by Speightstown) stamped himself a horse to follow when running out a clear-cut and convincing winner of Saturday’s one mile and an eighth contest while making his stakes debut.
Trainer Shug McGaughey said after the win, “He’s getting better and better.”This was a step up and he handled it. First time around two turns, first time he came over here to run. He had never run this far before, so I was very pleased with the whole thing.”

The improving Performer, who had won three in a row before his maiden graded race victory on Saturday, is out of the A.P. Indy mare Protesting, a granddaughter of Breeders’ Cup Fillies Juvenile winner My Flag.

Saturday’s Discovery Stakes winner, a winner of four of only five starts, traces back directly in female line to unbeaten US champion, and Broodmare Of The Year Personal Ensign.
The latter, whose unbeaten 13 race winning streak included 8 G1 triumphs, also ranks as the second dam of Fire Away and very promising US sire Mr Speaker.

Fire Away, who shares his outstanding sire War Front with the red hot stallion Declaration Of War, earned in excess of $600 000 during his career with his seven career wins including a score in the G3 Dixie Stakes.

His eagerly awaited first foals arrive in 2020.
