Drakenstein Stud’s red hot young sire What A Winter, South Africa’s Leading Second Crop Sire, looks to have a very smart sort on his hands in the form of Winter Blues.
The latter made it four wins on the bounce, and four wins from just six outings, when he scored a half-length win, under top-weight of 60.5kgs, over 1000m on the Greyville polytrack on Wednesday afternoon.
The gelded 3yo , whose four race winning streak has all been over 1000 metres, is trained by Louis Goosen and was steered to victory by Gunter Wrogemann.
Bred by Dr Ian Heyns, Winter Blues was a R125 000 purchase off the 2016 Emperors Palace Select Yearling Sale.
His triple Equus Champion sire What A Winter was South Africa’s Leading First Crop Sire in 2016-2017 and is currently well clear on the Second Season Sires List.
The four time Gr1 winner’s first crop, which includes Winter Blues, produced a flood of high class winners, notably the brilliant pair of Dutch Philip and Magical Wonderland, who between them have earned over R5 000 000 in stakes.
What A Winter also has some very promising two-year-olds to his name this season, notably Kuda Sprint winner Agent Of Fortune and impressive debut winners Clouds Unfold and Vertical Descent.
The champion has 14 yearlings on the April Yearling Sale and 20 lots on the Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.
