French feature race glory for Canford Cliffs

9th December 2018

Ridgemont Highlands’ multiple G1 winning stallion Canford Cliffs enjoyed feature race success in France on Sunday, when his five-year-old son Falcao Negro landed the Listed Prix Max Sicard -17 Etape du Defi Du Galop at Toulouse in facile fashion.

Trained by Henk Grewe, Falcao Negro turned the one mile four furlong contest into a one horse-race putting five and a half lengths between himself and runner up Almorox.

The British bred entire had early scored a five and a half length win back in September when Falcao Negro won Longchamps over a mile and two furlongs.

Falcao Negro is out of the Galileo mare Really Lovely and is thus bred on the same Canford Cliffs/Galileo cross as G1 Coronation Cup runner up Salouen and the very smart Wall Of Fire.

In-form sire Canford Cliffs has now 24 horses to his credit, with his previous high class performers including four time group winner Cliff’s Edge, G3 Three Troikas Stakes winner Fish River, Derby victor Dorset Noble, G2 winning two-year-old Painted Cliffs, and dual G3 Oak Tree Stakes winner Al Jazi.

Other smart performers sired by the five time G1 winning Canford Cliffs include G1 Investec Oaks third Harlequeen and Melbourne Cup contender Wall Of Fire.

A group winner at Royal Ascot three years running, Canford Cliffs’ five G1 victories came in the Irish 2000 Guineas, St James’s Palace Stakes, Sussex Stakes, Lockinge Stakes and Queen Anne Stakes.

Extremely well received in his first season in South Africa, Canford Cliffs covered over 100 mares in 2018.

He had a stud fee of R30 000 this year.
