Drakenstein Stud’s exciting sire Duke Of Marmalade was back in the news this weekend when his son Marmelo captured the G3 Prix de Barbeville at Chantilly.
Trained by Hughie Morrison and ridden by Christophe Soumillon, the four-year-old colt was driven to go 5 lengths and was second under 2f out, stayed on under pressure to lead well over 1f out, soon asserted and won a shade cosily.
The lightly raced Marmelo has won or placed in six of his seven outings and holds an entry in the G2 Yorkshire Cup.
Bred on a similar cross to Duke Of Marmalade’s top class daughters Simple Verse and Venus De Milo, Marmelo is one of 34 stakes winners for his Cartier Champion sire, whose offspring have banked more than $25 million in stakes.
Duke Of Marmalade, whose G3 Tommy Hotspur winning son Moofeed is a runner in Saturday’s G1 Computaform Sprint, has 20 yearlings on this week’s National Yearling Sale including a filly out of a Guineas winning daughter of Medaglia D’Oro and champion Circle Of Life (Lot 46), a half-brother to G2 winner Halve The Deficit and R6 million colt and recent debut winner Silver Coin (Lot 70), a filly out of a Fillies Guineas winning granddaughter of Sadler’s Wells (Lot 129) and a colt out of a G1 daughter of Var (Lot 157).
