Excelebration, the triple G1 winning half-brother to Drakenstein Stud’s G1 winning sire Lancaster Bomber, was back in the headlines on Sunday when his son Barney Roy captured the G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis-Bayerisches Zuchtrennen at Munich.

The even money favourite sported temporary headgear during the preliminaries of the 10-furlong contest and them soothing effect contributed to a smooth passage off the clear leaders in rear for the most part.Making headway in the straight when ridden along with a quarter-mile remaining, he joined the front rank, despite rolling around, entering the final furlong and was driven out to earn a third elite-level success in game fashion.

Trained by Charlie Appleby, the gelded Barney Roy has now won seven of 14 starts for prize money of 982 695 pounds, with his other notable victories including the 2017 G1 St James’s Palace Stakes and this year’s G1 Jebel Hatta.
To date, the son of Excelebration has won or placed in 11 pattern races.

Barney Roy’s high-class sire is one of four stakes winners produced by Indian Ridge mare Sun Showers, responsible also for G1 winner Lancaster Bomber and triple G3 winner Mull Of Killough.
The well related Sun Shower sports Irish 1000 Guineas winner Sarah Siddons as a granddam and this is also the family of G1 Prix Vermeille heroine Leggera.

A son of outstanding sire War Front (whose other sire sons include proven G1 stallions Declaration Of War and The Factor, Lancaster Bomber won ran 1-2 in six G1 races, with his victories including a score in the 2018 G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup.

His first South African foals arrive later this year.
