Gardenia Stakes success for Rafeef

7th Nov 2022

Ridgemont Highlands’ prominent young stallion Rafeef enjoyed a big payday at Turffontein on Sunday when his speedy daughter Bella Chica claimed Sunday’s Listed Gardenia Stakes (1000m) in courageous fashion.

Under Ryan Munger, four-year-old Bella Chica powered home down the centre of the track to get up close home and score a thrilling long-head victory.

Trained by Ashley Fortune, Bella Chica has now won six of 18 starts for earnings of R399 125.

Bred by Klawervlei Stud, Bella Chica is out of the Captain Al mare War Path.

She is the sixth stakes winner to have emerged from Rafeef’s exceptional first crop, with this crop also responsible for G1 WSB SA Derby winner Aragosta and G1 Computaform Sprint victor Master Archie.
Bella Chica was one of two winners for Rafeef at Turffontein on Sunday, with the son of Redoute’s Choice also sire of the very exciting filly Moonshiningthrough. The latter made it four wins from just five starts when besting the brilliant Desert Miracle to claim Sunday’s TAB 4Racing Pinnacle Stakes (1160m) in courageous fashion.
Trained by Johan Janse Van Vuuren, the Narrow Creek Stud bred filly (another top-class member of Rafeef’s first crop) powered home to win a good race by a neck, with last season’s G1 Allan Robertson Championship winner Sweet Pepper well held in fourth spot.
South Africa’s Leading Second Season Sire last season, Rafeef struck yet again when his son Prince Of Kimberly made a winning debut at Borrowdale Park on Saturday.
