Gimmethegreenlight colt romps home in SplashOut Cape Derby

25th February 2024

South Africa’s reigning champion sire Gimmethegreenlight came up with his ninth G1 winner when his three-year-old son Green With Envy romped home to a facile win in the G1 SplashOut Cape Derby (2000m) at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday.
An impressive winner of the G3 Schweppes Politician Stakes at his previous start, the Dean Kannemeyer-trained Green With Envy was duly sent off a 14-10 favourite for Saturday’s R1 500 000 classic.
Under a patient ride from Craig Zackey, Green With Envy was unleashed with his trademark turn of foot down the outside of the track, and the brilliant three-year-old pulled away to land the 2024 Cape Derby by a fluent two and three-quarter lengths.
Bred and owned by Khaya Stables, Green With Envy is out of the Galileo mare Miss Coco.
The colt has now won four of just eight starts with his Cape Derby triumph taking Green With Envy’s earnings to R1 406 399.
Green With Envy is one of 61 stakes winners for his Varsfontein Stud-based sire, with Gimmethegreenlight also responsible for impressive recent G2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas winner Gimme A Nother and eye-catching G2 TAB Gauteng Guineas hero Sandringham Summit.
Gimme A Nother looks hard to beat in Saturday’s G1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic with Sandringham Summit also looking a hard nut to crack in the same day’s G1 SA Classic.
Green With Envy was one of two winners at Kenilworth on Saturday for Gimmethegreenlight (whose daughter Summer Lily ran second in Saturday’s Listed Schweppes Cape Fillies Classic), with the latter’s daughter Pineapplemintgreen victorious in the ninth race run on Saturday.
