Varsfontein Stud’s champion resident sire Gimmethegreenlight had yet more big race success at Kenilworth on Saturday afternoon, when his top-class son Cosmic Highway ran out a hugely impressive winner of the G2 Diadem Stakes over 1200 metres.
Dropping back in trip after finishing third in the G1 Cape Guineas, the Dean Kannemeyer trained colt made it four wins from just eight starts with a fluent victory.
Under Keagan De Melo, Cosmic Highway hit the front 150m from home and powered clear to score by a length and a quarter, while accounting for another talented three-year-old Trip Of Fortune, with reigning champion sprinter Rio Querari another neck away in third.
Cosmic Highway, who claimed the 2022 Diadem Stakes in a time of 71.38 seconds, has now three graded or listed races to his name, with the Gimmethegreenlight colt also victorious in the 2021 G3 Cape Of Good Hope Nursery and 2021 Listed Cell C Sharks Gatecrasher Stakes.
Bred by Maine Chance Farms, Cosmic Highway was a R400 000 buy from the 2020 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.
The colt is out of the winning Silvano mare Cosmic Dream and is thus bred on the same Gimmethegreenlight/Silvano cross as triple graded stakes winner Barahin.
South Africa’s Champion Sire of 2020-2021, Gimmethegreenlight is enjoying another wonderful season this year, with his growing list of flagbearers including such graded stakes winners as Follow Me, Gimme Dat, One Night In Paris, Second Base and Universal.
Gimmethegreenlight went close to enjoying a Cape Of Good Hope Nursery double with his son Wecangoallnight making an impressive debut when finishing second in Saturday’s Cape Nursery.
