Varsfontein Stud’s resident stallion, and South Africa’s reigning champion sire, Gimmethegreenlight enjoyed a tremendous weekend once again this past week.
However, it was as a broodmare sire that Gimmethegreenlight shone over the weekend -with his daughters coming up with two winners, including a very impressive debut winner at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on Sunday.
Gimmethegreenlight mares dominated the finish to the first race at Scottsville on Sunday where first-timer Return To Russia (out of the Gimmethegreenlight mare Yekaterina) beat Boundless Bash (out of the Gimmethegreenlight sired Kissaway) into second when running out a clear-cut winner of the WSB.co.za Maiden Juvenile Plate over 1200 metres.
Trained by Michael Miller, the Normandy Stud bred Return To Russia looks like a colt with a bright future ahead of him, and the two-year-old could well keep Gimmethegreenlight’s name in lights as a broodmare sire.
One day earlier, Miss Otis (out of the Gimmethegreenlight daughter Aunt Polly) got off the mark when she won the Betontab.co.za Maiden Plate (1600m) at Turffontein. Trained by Michael and Adam Azzie, three-year-old Miss Otis was bred by the Varsfontein Stud.
Already broodmare sire of four winners from seven runners (at the highly impressive strike rate of 57.1%), Gimmethegreenlight is a son of More Than Ready, himself an increasingly potent broodmare sire.
At the time of writing, More Than Ready mares had produced more than 120 stakes winners, with his daughters already responsible for such as Breeders’ Cup winners Four Wheel Drive and Structor as well as the G1 winners Atlante, Delectation, Rebel Dane, and Regal Glory.
More Than Ready himself made waves as a broodmare sire this weekend with his maternal grandson Wellington capturing Sunday’s G1 Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup at Sha Tin.
With some exceptionally talented and well bred daughters yet to be represented on the track, the future looks bright indeed for Gimmethegreenlight as a broodmare sire!
