The Cape racing and breeding industry received a handsome boost when Gimmethegreenlight son Yulong Prince, who raced under the name of Surcharge in South Africa, captured the G1 Kennedy Cantala (1600m) at Flemington racecourse on Saturday afternoon.

It was a first Australian G1 success for the Varsfontein Stud bred Yulong Prince, who was ridden to victory by Damian Lane.
The Chris Waller trained entire had been fourth in the G1 Epsom Handicap last time out, finishing less than a length and a half behind multiple G1 winner Probabeel.
It was a hot pace in Saturday’s race, set by Buffalo River, and the swoopers from the back were the best over the line, Yulong Prince holding off the challenge by Cascadian to score with Rock back to the inside for third.
Now a six-year-old, Yulong Prince, victorious in the 2019 Furphy Plate, has now won eight of his 28 starts, with Saturday’s win taking his earnings to $1 499 371 -or over R17 000 000!
One of the best of his generation in South Africa at three, Yulong Prince won six of 11 local outings, with his performances headed by a triumph in the G1 Daily News 2000 of 2018.
Yulong Prince is one of more than 50 black type horses for More Than Ready horse Gimmethegreenlight thus far, with the sire also responsible for multiple Equus Champion Got The Greenlight.
Gimmethegreenlight, South Africa’s Leading First Season Sire of 2015-2016, had an excellent season in 2019-2020 when his offspring, headed by eight individual black type winners, banked in excess of R10.726 million.
