Gimmethegreenlight son entered for Cups

29th August 2019

Varsfontein Stud’s increasingly successful More Than Ready sire Gimmethegreenlight, whose son Got The Greenlight, was named Equus Champion 2YO Colt for 2018-2019, could be represented by a runner in both the G1 Lexus Melbourne Cup and G1 Stella Artois Caulfield Cup this year.

Surcharge/Yulong Prince

His Varsfontein bred son Yulong Prince (formerly known as Surcharge) has been entered for both the $8 000 000 Melbourne Cup and $5.15 million Caulfield Cup.

Now a five-year-old, and in the care of Chris Waller, Yulong Prince ran just under four lengths off the winner when making his first Australian start (and having his first race since April).

The entire won or placed in ten of his 11 South African starts, with Surcharge winning the G1 Daily News 2000, Tony Ruffel Stakes and Secretariat Stakes, and also finishing second in all of the G1 SA Derby, G1 SA Classic and G2 Gauteng Guineas.

His sire Gimmethegreenlight enjoyed a fantastic season in 2018-2019 with his progeny winning all of the G1 Premiers Champion Stakes, G2 Gauteng Guineas, G2 Post Merchants, G3 Jubilee Handicap, G3 Prix du Cap, G3 Graham Beck Stakes, G3 Cape Summer Stayers, and G3 Chairman’s Cup.

South Africa’s Leading First Crop Sire of 2015-2016, Gimmethegreenlight is currently the sire of 44 black type performers and counting!
