Maine Chance Farms’ sensational stallion Vercingetorix celebrated a big race double at Kenilworth on Saturday afternoon, with Vercingetorix filly Chansonette winning the G1 World Sports Betting Cape Fillies Guineas (1600m) and Vercingetorix colt Seeking The Stars landing the G2 WSB Club Prive Green Point Stakes (1600m) respectively.
Yet another son of Vercingetorix, Surjay won the second race run at Kenilworth, to give Vercingetorix the first of three winners on Saturday’s nine race card.
Exciting three-year-old Chansonette became her red hot sire’s third G1 winner (following Ambiorix and Vernichey) when she downed a top-class field of fillies to win Saturday’s R500 000 Cape Fillies Guineas.
Under an inform Grant Van Niekerk, the Andre Nel trained filly produced a tremendous late burst, which saw Chansonete get up close home and score by a neck.
Runner up in the G2 Western Cape Fillies Championship last time out, the Maine Chance Farms bred Chansonette has now won three of just five starts.
The filly, who is out of the Querari mare Champery, was a R500 000 buy from the 2020 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.
Her paternal half-brother Seeking The Stars made it back to back graded stakes wins when he ran out a game winner of the Green Point Stakes on Saturday.
The Vaughan Marshall trained colt, winner of the G3 #ThisIsRacing Matchem Stakes last time out, was given a fine, front running ride by Anton Marcus.
Marcus quickly sent Seeking The Stars to the front, and the Vercingetorix colt kept finding more in front to hold off reigning Horse Of The Year Rainbow Bridge to win by nearly half a length, with dual G1 winner Linebacker another three-parts of a length away.
Bred by Klawervlei Stud, Seeking The Stars has now won six of 13 starts, with the colt’s four graded wins also including a triumph in the 2020 G3 Cape Classic.
Also sire of Tuesday’s G3 World Sports Betting Merchants hero Alesian Chief, Vercingetorix is currently South Africa’s Leading Sire, by stakes, for 2021-2022.
