The Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein bred Hawwaam was named Cape Breeders’ Horse Of The Year for 2019-2020 at a virtual ceremony which took place on Sunday evening.

Hawwaam, whose sire Silvano was named Champion Sire and dam Halfway To Heaven was honoured as the Cape’s Broodmare Of The Year for 2019-2020, won four of six starts last season including the G1 World Sports Betting Champions Challenge (for a second time) and G1 H F Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes.
The bay was also named Champion Older Male and Champion Middle Distance Horse for the past season.
Trained by Mike de Kock for Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum, the Australia bound Hawwaam has won a total of 10 of 13 starts (he has five G1 wins to his name) and has earned over R6.769 million in prize money.
The 2020 Cape Breeders awards proved a triumph for Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzonftein (named the Cape’s Outstanding Breeders for 2019-2020), who bred Summer Pudding, Celtic Sea and Hawwaam -who between them collected five awards, while Wilgerbosdrift’s outstanding mare Halfway To Heaven (responsible for three individual G1 winners last season) was named Broodmare Of The Year.
