Horse Chestnut Stakes success for Querari

2nd March 2025

Maine Chance Farms’ inform stallion Querari enjoyed another big payday at Turffontein on Saturday. Querari’s three-year-old son Cosmic Speed downed a top-class field to win Saturday’s G1 Wilgerbosdrift H F Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes over 1600m.
In the process, Cosmic Speed became his sire’s fourth Grade One winner, with Querari responsible for fellow top-level winners Bavarian Beauty, Querari Falcon and champion Rio Querari.
Trained by Sean Tarry, Cosmic Speed was given a well-judged ride by Craig Zackey in Saturday’s R1 500 000 contest. Racing just off the pace early on, Cosmic Speed quickened up smartly to hit the front 150m from home.
From there the Querari gelding drew off to claim his biggest win by a length and three quarters.
Bred by Maine Chance Farms, Cosmic Speed has won four of eight starts, with the son of Querari having prevailed in last season’s G2 Durban Golden Horseshoe.
Cosmic Speed was a R725 000 purchase from the 2023 National Yearling Sale.
Out of the Silvano mare Cosmic Dream, Cosmic Speed is a full-brother to G2 The Debutante winner Cosmic Light.
Saturday’s winner is bred on the same Querari/Silvano cross as graded stakes winners Bavarian Beauty, Homely Girl, Rainbow Lorikeet and Wonderwall, to name but a few.
Querari, South Africa’s Leading Sire of 2YOs in 2018-2019, is having another fine season in 2024-2025, with the son of Oasis Dream once again heading the Leading Sires of 2YOs premiership.
He has 13 yearlings on offer at the upcoming Premier Yearling Sale, and a further 19 lots on offer at the National Yearling Sale.
