Sandown Stud’s proven sire Ashaawes reached a notable milestone over the weekend, when his maternal granddaughter See You Tyger (Where’s That Tiger) won the Listed Bauhinia Handicap at Turffontein on Saturday.
In the process, the Paul Matchett trained filly, whose dam is Ashaawes’s G3 Pretty Polly third place-getter Sioux She, became the first stakes winner produced by a daughter of Ashaawes.
Bred by Limpo Trading (Pty) Ltd, three-year-old See You Tyger has now won or placed in seven of 12 outings, with the progressive filly having won three of her last four races.
Ashaawes is certainly bred to do well as a broodmare sire –his sire Kingmambo is an exceptional broodmare sire, while Ashaawes’ dam Crown Of Crimson, is a daughter of Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew –who was Champion Broodmare Sire in the USA in both 1995 and 1996.
Kingmambo (whose daughters include the very successful SA broodmare Kelly’s Olympics) is damsire of more than 130 stakes winners, notably Cartier Champion and successful sire Duke Of Marmalade, the Investec Derby winners Camelot and Ruler Of The World, Breeders’ Cup winner Midday, and G1 Coronation Stakes winner Maids Causeway.
Ashaawes also hails from the same female line as high class US sire Broken Vow, whose daughters have already produced such G1 winners as Runhappy (Breeders’ Cup Sprint), Hampton Court (Spring Champion Stakes) and Big World (La Troienne Stakes).
Already the sire of such notable performers as Priceless Jewel, Reim, Sanshaawes, and Way Clear, Ashaawes has been represented recently by the winners Tree Of Life, Transylvania and Tippu Tib–as well as Winter Watch, who ran third (behind See You Tyger) in Saturday’s Bauhinia Handicap.
