Drakenstein Stud’s prominent sire What A Winter is one of the hottest stallions in South Africa at the moment.
The triple Equus Champion made it five South African winners since Saturday when the son of Western Winter had a double at Kenilworth’s Tuesday meeting.
What A Winter made it a quickfire double on Tuesday, with his progeny winning the first two races carded.
First of the champion’s progeny to score was the Joey Ramsden trained Apollo Ace, who justified 16-10 favouritism by shedding his maiden by three parts of a length over 1000m. The Favour Stud bred colt has now won or placed in five of his six outings, with Apollo Ace’s sole unplaced effort coming when sixth on debut.
Out of the Captain Al mare Me ‘N You, Apollo Ace was a R625 000 buy from the 2017 Cape Premier Yearling Sale. (His sire had progeny make up to R2 800 000 at that sale).
What A Winter, himself a four time G1 winner, had another 1000m winner on Tuesday when his 3yo daughter Winter Five made most of the running to get off the mark by three parts of a length.
Under jockey Devin Ashby, the 3yo stayed on to down the well bred Alsflamingbeauty by three parts of a length, with What A Winter daughter What A Red running third.
Bred by the Hemel ‘n Aarde Stud, Winter Five has now won or been second in four of her last five outings.
Her in-form sire What A Winter, South Africa’s Champion First Crop Sire of 2016-2017, looks to have a strong crop of 3yos representing him this season, with his headliners including Saturday’s very impressive G2 Western Cape Fillies Championship winner Clouds Unfold and Kuda Sprint hero Agent Of Fortune.
What A Winter has one filly (Lot 46) on offer at Sunday’s Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale, and five juveniles on offer at the upcoming CTS Ready To Run Sale.
