Master Of My Fate relatives dominate Cape features

22nd November 2020

Varsfontein Stud’s high-class Jet Master horse Master Of My Fate hails from one of the hottest families in the South African stud book, and this impressive family was once again to the fore at Kenilworth on Saturday afternoon.

Top-class 3yos Malmoos and Erik The Red, both Varsfontein Stud bred colts by Captain Al, won the G2 Avontuur Estate Concorde Cup (1600m) and G2 Cape Thoroughbred Sales Merchants powered by GG Gaming(1200M) respectively, to provide Master Of My Fate’s stellar female line with more big race glory.

Now unbeaten in four starts, Malmoos picked up his second consecutive graded win (he had won the G3 Palacebet.co.za Live Games Graham Beck Stakes last time out) when staying on strongly to post a half length win, for Mike de Kock and Luke Ferraris, in Saturday’s Concorde Cup -a traditional prep for the G1 Cape Guineas.

His close relative Erik The Red, in turn, stamped himself as a hugely impressive future prospect when romping home to a clear-cut, three-parts of a length win in Saturday’s Cape Merchants. The regally bred colt has now won six of nine starts, with his previous triumphs including wins in both the G2 Epol Umkhomazi Stakes and G3 KEPU Cape Of Good Hope Nursery.

(Remarkably, Due Diligence, another member of this superb family ran third in the G3 Fillies Mile at Turffontein on the same day).

Malmoos’s Spook Express Handicap winning dam Justthewayyouare is a half-sister to Master Of My Fate, while Erik The Red’s G1 Majorca Stakes winning dam Covenant is out of speedy stakes winner Secret Pact -the granddam of Master Of My Fate.

Master Of My Fate, whose progeny include 2020 G1 winners Sentbydestiny and Tempting Fate, himself went close to enjoying feature race success on Saturday with his daughter Miss Elegance running second in the G3 Fillies Mile.
