Philanthropist filly wins on debut

11th Apr 2019

Drakenstein Stud’s resident stallion Philanthropist was in the news on Thursday when his daughter Rachel made a winning debut over 1200 metres at the Vaal.
The Patricia Devine bred 3yo defied greeness by staying on gamely to win at the first time of asking by neck.

Trained by Paul Peter, Rachel was the subect of glowing reports before the race, which saw the Philanthropist filly backed into 5-8 favouritism.

The Leading All Weather Sire in North America in 2014, Philanthropist is a well established stallion whose notable progeny include champions Pender Harbour and Phil’s Dream, Hong Kong star Singapore Sling, Queen’s Plate second Hippolytus, graded stakes winning filly She’s A Giver and classy G1 contender Pack Leader.

To date, Philanthropist has been responsible for nearly 40 black type performers with his offspring having banked over $27 million in stakes thus far.

From the same male line as champion South African sires Al Mufti and Captain Al, Philanthropist has 14 yearlings on offer at the upcoming National Yearling Sale, including a colt (Lot 49) out of a G3 winning half-sister to outstanding sire Candy Ride, a filly (Lot 183) out of a G3 winning daughter of Fort Wood from the family of Danehill, a half-sister (Lot 209) to Winter Derby winner Liquid Mercury and a colt (Lot 241) out of G2 Merchants winner Varikate.
