Pomodoro colt impresses on debut

5th Apr 2019

Klawervlei Stud’s exciting sire Pomodoro had a second two-year-old winner in two days when his Ascot Stud bred son Bhaltair made a winning debut at Fairview on Friday afternoon.

Under jockey Muzi Yeni, the Gavin Smith trained colt ran on steadily, despite being green in running, to score a comfortable three-parts of a length win over 1400m at the first time of asking.

Owned by Mr Burggraaf, Bhaltair had been a R150 000 buy from the 2018 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.

His in-form sire Pomodoro had been responsible for yet another two-year-old winner on Thursday, when his promising son Putontheredlight downed Australian bred Jash to score over 1200m at just the second time of asking, stamping himself an exciting future prospect in the process.

At the time of writing, Pomodoro has had seven 2yo runners this season, with four having either won or finished in the money.

South Africa’s Leading First Crop Sire of 2017-2018, Pomodoro has made an exceptional start to his stud career, with his first crop (now three) headed by multiple G1 winning Equus Champion Return Flight, R4.5 million plus earner Cirillo, and the classy stakes performers Royal Italian and Cedar Man.

The son of seven times champion sire Jet Master and Broodmare Of The Year Golden Apple has five yearlings on offer at this month’s Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.
