Rafeef filly lands War Of Athena Handicap

31st December 2023

Ridgemont’s G1 Computaform Sprint winning sire Rafeef had a good day on Saturday, with the son of Redoute’s Choice supplying two winners at Turffontein including Listed War Of Athena Handicap winner Juliet Tango.
The latter claimed the biggest win of her career when she captured Saturday’s R225 000 feature for fillies and mares, with Juliet Tango having now won three of 19 starts.
Under Serino Moodley, the Lorenzo Karriem trained Juliet Tango made a mockery of her 16-1 starting price when she powered home to claim the War Of Athena Handicap (formerly the Jacaranda Handicap) by two lengths.
Fifth in the Listed Summer Pudding Handicap previously, the five-year-old is out of the Jet Master mare Jet Trail.
Juliet Tango, who was bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, was a R210 000 buy from the 2020 National 2YO Sale.
The mare is the 15th stakes winner for Rafeef, South Africa’s Leading First Season Sire of 2020-2021.
Rafeef is also the sire of recent G3 Joburg Tourism Carry On Alice Stakes winner Mrs Browning. The latter made it three wins from her last four starts when she bounded clear to win Saturday’s 4Racing Wishes You Prosperous New Year Pinnacle Stakes (1160m) for Sean Tarry and Philasande Mxoli.
A full-sister to G1 World Sports Betting SA Derby winner Aragosta (winner of the recent Listed Spinawina Slots Cape Summer Stayers Handicap), Mrs Browning has now won five times from just 12 starts.
Her full-brother is set to contest Saturday’s G3 Glorious Goodwood Chairman’s Cup at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth.
Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, Mrs Browning (who is out of the Galileo mare Miss Galidora) was a R120 000 purchase from the 2021 August Two Year Old Sale.
Her G1 Computaform Sprint winning sire Rafeef has 16 lots on offer at the 2024 Cape Racing Premier Yearling Sale Powered By Tattersalls and eight lots on offer at the 2024 Cape Yearling Sale.
