Saturday double for What A Winter

30th September 2019

Drakenstein Stud’s increasingly successful young sire What A Winter has made a bright start to the 2019-2020 racing season, and the four time G1 winner and triple Equus Champion was back in the headlines once again on Saturday.

The son of Western Winter was responsible for two eye catching winners on Saturday, with daughter Yucatan winning at Durbanville and son Tripod scoring at Turffontein respectively.

Yucatan, one of three winners on the card for trainer Justin Snaith and jockey Richard Fourie, had been second at her only previous start at Durbanville, and the three-year-old confirmed her enjoyment of the track, when she romped home to break her maiden by two and three quarter lengths over 1000m.
Dispatched the tote favourite for Saturday’s race, Yucatan was bred by Bosworth Farm Stud and she is out of the Fort Wood mare Veracruz.

What A Winter’ second winner on Saturday came when his son Tripod scored over 1000m at Turffontein for current log leading trainer Paul Peter and apprentice Cole Dicken.  In reeling off his third career win, the gelded Tripod accounted for stable mate Ring Of Fire by three-parts of a length, with Ring Of Fire also being a son of What A Winter.

South Africa’s Leading First Crop Sire of 2016-2017, What A Winter has once again impressed this season, with his early winners this season including Sophomore Sprint victor Three Two Charlie, and the very speedy filly Sarah.

The multiple champion sprinter has two lots on the 2019 Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale –a half-brother (Lot 120) to smart sorts Varuna and Chantyman, and a filly (Lot 122) from the immediate family of Cape Guineas winner, and multiple champion sire, Captain Al.
