Smart debut winner for Potala Palace

20th Sep 2018

Highlands Stud part of Ridgemont’s G1 winning young sire Potala Palace has made a pleasing start with his first crop thus far, and the son of Singspiel was at it again at Turffontein on Thursday.

Palace Chapel

His 3yo first crop son Palace Chapel quickened up smartly to make a winning debut over 1000m for trainer Paul Peter, with Palace Chapel putting two and a quarter lengths between himself and his stablemate and runner up American Hustle.

Bred by the Alado Project, Palace Chapel is out of the winning Special Preview mare Gem Quality – and he looks to have been a bargain buy at the 2017 March Yearling Sale where he cost just R20 000.

His sire’s previous first crop winners include the stakes placed filly Watsonia, impressive debut winner Basilius and facile recent winner Dalai’s Promise.

The handsome Potala Palace won two of only three starts at two, culminating in an impressive victory in the G1 Premier’s Champion Stakes. He would train on well to win the G2 Joburg Spring Challenge at five, where he accounted for five graded stakes winners.

A son of world champion and leading sire Singspiel, Potala Palace is out of the G3 Alzao mare Alignment, who also ranks as the granddam of graded stakes winners Excellent Result and Midnight Crossing.

This is the same family as outstanding sires Fairy King, Nureyev and Sadler’s Wells, with the latter also ranking as Potala Palace’s great grandsire.

Another notable member of this family is current boom US sire and champion, Blame -sire of 2018 G1 winners Fault and Marley’s Freedom.
