Thursday treble for sensational What A Winter

15th Mar 2019

Drakenstein Stud’s increasingly successful stallion What A Winter has been firing on all cylinders this season, with his winners coming fast and thick all over the country.

Clouds Unfold

South Africa’s former Leading First Crop Sire was at it again on Thursday, when What A Winter was responsible for three very impressive winners (from just three runners!) at the Vaal racecourse.

What A Winter’s 2yo daughter Fly Away became her sire’s sixth juvenile winner for the 2018-2019 season when making an impressive winning debut over 1000m.

Fly Away, one of three winners on the day for trainer Paul Peter and jockey Warren Kennedy, simply romped home to win as she liked first time out by 4.75 lengths and she looks a very smart sort indeed!

Bred by the Narrow Creek Stud, Fly Away (who is intensely inbred to Western Winter) was a R100 000 buy from last year’s National Yearling Sale.

What A Winter is also the sire of the very promising Geoff Woodruff trained gelding Mr Whatson, who maintained his unbeaten record when victorious over 1000m. The Stone Hill Stud bred 3yo followed up a smart win on debut, when downing some talented performers to land an assessment plate in courageous fashion –despite still appearing green in the running.

Out of the National Emblem mare Antigua, Mr Whatson (now a winner of two races from as many outings) was a R200 000 purchase from the 2017 National Yearling Sale.

Fabian

What A Winter’s third winner on Thursday came when his Paul Peter trained son Winter Storm romped home to a two length score over 1000m.
Winter Storm, whose beaten rivals on Thursday included G2 Golden Horseshoe winner Purple Diamond, has now won three (and two in a row), with the gelding having now won or placed in 8 of 11 outings.

His four time G1 winning sire What A Winter is enjoying another stellar season in 2018-2019, with the multiple Equus Champion also sire of G1 Bidvest Majorca Stakes winner (and millionaire) Clouds Unfold, Ibhyai Stakes hero Fabian, and recent Bauhinia Handicap runner up Pretty Penny.

What A Winter has nine lots on offer at Sunday’s Cape Yearling Sale, and 29 lots on April’s National Yearling Sale.
